Environmental concerns and regulations call for a substantial reduction in jet noise, whereas the complexity of the combustion-acoustic interactions makes the problem very challenging. As a result, innovative methods of reducing jet noise are investigated. A combined experimental and computational research program investigating the role of partial premixing and swirl on pollutant and noise emissions from aeropropulsion gas-turbine engines is being performed by Frankel and his coworkers at Purdue University (Chapter 1).
