When the inlet temperature is high, the required fuel to generate sufficient heat could lead to high outlet temperatures from combustion chamber, which can in turn increase NOx emissions. Water injection in the compressor inlet can be used to reduce NOx emissions since it allows cooler air to enter the combustion chamber. However, increasing the pressure ratio in gas turbine engines has the potential to increase NOx emissions. The effect can be explained noting the relationship between pressure ratio and temperature rise in the compressor, which is illustrated in Figure 8 for a 100% compressor efficiency.
