Wealthy Romans often systematically looted many sites in the Mediterranean region for sculpture and other works of art to decorate their palaces and gardens. However, they seemed to have little concern for using these finds to understand the past. It wasn’t until the Renaissance of the 14th–17th centuries, an era of reawakened interest in the arts, literature, science, and learning in general, that the study of the past began to flourish. Excavation and direct recovery of antiquities became increasingly popular in Italy as Roman ruins were probed in search of artifacts and art.

Biological anthropology studies the human species as a biological organism, including our evolution (a diachronic aspect) and our contemporary biological characteristics and variations (a synchronic aspect). Cultural anthropology studies the human species as a cultural organism, including two synchronic approaches to the study of living societies: (1) ethnography, which studies individual cultures throughout the world, and (2) ethnology, which uses a comparative and generalizing perspective to understand the way all cultures work.

A good example in which history was illuminated by archaeology is the excavation of Martin’s Hundred, where archaeologist Ivor Noël Hume and his associates unearthed the fragile remnants of one of the earliest British colonial settlements of Tidewater Virginia. Originally, the team had been seeking traces of the 18th-century Carter’s Grove plantation. Illustrating that archaeology often discovers the unexpected, they found instead remains from the early 1600s, virtually all that was left of what historical records refer to as Wolstenholme Towne in a tract known as Martin’s Hundred.
