Settling in as everyone arrives When the players arrive, give everyone a chance to get settled and socialize. This is a time-honored ritual for the beginning of D&D games everywhere, and you shouldn’t try to fight it. D&D is as much a social event as it is a game, so let the players talk and joke and catch up before the game swings into high gear. If this is your first game, have the host show everyone where to put coats and jackets, as well as point out where the bathroom and other necessities can be found.
The best size depends on what you’re comfortable running, but we’ve found that groups of five to seven people work out best (one DM and four to six players).
