In this chapter we analyse the impact of this transformation on the white goods corporations which emerged in the three countries we consider. The comparisons are fascinating since they tell a story of the geography of production, that is, how global corporations work space to consolidate their power and how the changing role of the state is so central in this transformation. The comparison reveals how the local impacts of this global concentration of corporate power in the hands of a few mega corporations differ markedly.

We then provide an overview of the concentration of production at the global level. This forms the backdrop to the radical shift in industry policy in South Africa and Australia as the role of the state is transformed from the guardian of local production to the handmaiden of global interests as free market ideology is embraced without restraint. Corporate restructuring accelerates as a consequence, often with destructive economic and social impacts at the local level. Before moving to this analysis, we need to make a significant point.

Capital flight by foreign companies led to a period of monopolization of the South African economy and so Defy also ended up in the hands of Sankorp, the industrial arm of Sanlam, one of the major Afrikaner financial powerhouses created by ‘Volkskapitalisme’ (see O’Meara 1982). With the rise of the militant industrial unions in urban areas, the state also supported capital’s spatial fix to rural areas under the control of pseudo-independent tribal authorities. The official term for this strategy was ‘industrial decentralization’.
