Several architectural phases were discerned here. The starting gates, like all other parts of the hippodrome, were built of kurkar stone and coated with white plaster. More than half of the stalls were exposed in a section c. 30 m wide on the eastern part. The stalls further to the west were eroded by the sea. It is logical to assume that they were similar, symmetrically arranged structures. Three phases were discerned in the arrangement of the starting gates. 113 The Phase I carceres had five stalls on either side of the central gate.
