Nevertheless, in the absence of a theoretical explanation for bias, it is no longer possible to assume, as is generally done, that bias affects only the positions of the psychometric curves along the scale of (v-s) differences, but leaves their precision unchanged. When only two categories of judgment are allowed, of course, the two psychometric functions are miror images of each other, and only one value of <7(ys) need be calculated.
Despite its appeal, however, the classical model suffers from a number of critical limitations. As we have seen, the most serious of these appears to be that there is no theoretical representation for bias on the part of an observer, nor any theoretical mechanism for the making of (and preference for) intermediate judgments. That these problems are not purely conceptual is demonstrated by Festinger's finding (1943a) that the PSE was shifted upwards when observers were required, under "constant error" instructions, to guard against making "greater" responses incorrectly, and downwards when observers were told to be careful not to make "lesser" responses incorrectly.

Indeed, by the turn of the century Solomons could allude to "the well known fact of the variability of brain activity under identical stimuli" (1900, p. 234). More recently, Welford (1965, 1968) has suggested that other central sources of disturbance might include the after-effects of cerebral activity, as well as random variations in the level of background activity due to other ongoing cortical processes.
